Position Summary


Provide multi-jurisdictional direction to officers, business unit leadership, management employees, and union leadership concerning matters related to company’s OSHA safety programs, initiatives and projects. Partner strategically with internal and external stakeholders to integrate safety and OSHA regulatory compliance requirements into the business operating strategies and practices. Collaborate with Operations, Corporate Functions and contractor safety to ensure a strategic, effective, and efficient approach to ensure alignment on executing OSHA safety requirements. Oversee a continuous improvement process to ensure the Company’s safe work practices, written safety programs, and safety training content are understood and implemented by front line workers. Provide strategy and direction including utilizing appropriate resources for safety program management and oversight.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, assess and administer a portfolio of safety strategies and programs that meets regulatory requirements, manages human injury risk, and produces desired business results through effective program management and execution.

  • Partner with business unit extended leadership and field safety managers to develop and execute effective strategies to ensure employees meet or exceed OSHA safety requirements while performing their work. Provide support to the business areas in meeting expectations and goals by fostering an environment where safety and compliance are integral parts of the business.

  • Be a key leader in collaboratively driving the company’s vision of building 100% capacity to fail safely when working around high energy hazards and eliminating serious injury and fatality incidents. 

  • Lead the company’s Occupational Safety & Health governance council including preparing, facilitating, and overseeing follow-up actions.

  • Support and lead key activities in the company’s One Xcel Energy Way approach to driving safety performance improvement.

  • Collaborate with the business units to ensure new or revised OSHA standards are effectively and efficiently implemented. Establish an assurance program to validate that any changes are implemented and being sustained. 

  • Lead and set priorities through business area teams for maximum efficiency in the implementation of policies, programs and initiatives that meet business area objectives and regulatory compliance.

  • Provide guidance, technical expertise and counsel to business area leadership in dealing with federal, state and local regulatory entities. Partner with corporate safety in responding to agency requests. Develop & maintain effective relationships with vendors, contractors and consultants.

  • Oversee the execution of the company’s industrial hygiene program to ensure the safety of our employees and compliance with OSHA requirements.

  • Oversee the execution of the company’s drug free workplace program.

  • Responsible for hiring, managing and maintaining an effective team of professionals. Attract, recruit and retain a highly motivated technical staff. Develop and communicate clear performance expectations at a team and individual level.

  • Manage budgetary responsibilities.

Minimum Requirements

  • College degree in safety, engineering, business or related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience required.

  • Ten years of utility experience or related experience in an industrial or process plant environment.

  • Five years demonstrated management experience.

  • Project management, process improvement, negotiation, strategic implementation, team leadership and facilitation experience required.

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a diverse & rapidly changing business environment, customer focus, strong communication skills and in-depth knowledge of industry regulations.

  • Ability to travel 25% of the time.

  • Must be able to walk on uneven surfaces, ascend and descend stairs, stand or sit for periods up to an hour.

  • Must be able to present information and data to small and large groups of people.

Preferred Requirements

  • Utility safety program management experience preferred.

  • Certifications preferred.

Non-Bargaining

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $139,400.00 to $197,467.00 per year
