Mechanical Technician Job

We anticipate the need for one or more Mechanical Technician(s) to be located at Black Dog Generating Plant located in Burnsville, MN. The starting rate of pay for this position is $49.09 hourly as defined in the labor agreement. This position will be posted for 10 working days from September 7, 2021 - Septermber 20, 2021.


Maintenance Technician shall have a general knowledge of the total plant equipment, procedures, and operations. The technician shall have specific expertise for the maintenance and repair of total plant systems.
1. Minimum maintenance skills include thorough knowledge of machinist tools, precision instruments, mechanical repair and be able to apply this knowledge to all types of machinist work.  The maintenance technician contains all skills equivalent to Machinist.
2. Troubleshoots, investigates issues, performs preventative and corrective maintenance as directed by plant management on various plant systems associated with most major plant equipment including CTs, HRSGs, steam turbines, generators, water treatment, etc.
3. Maintains all shop tools and equipment such as drill presses, grinders, hoists, lathes, milling machines, shapers, saws, etc..
4. Understands and safely uses hand tools, shop tools and other power tools.
5. Shall be able to read and understand system P&ID’s to safely apply lockout procedures.
6. Assists plant management in procuring required materials and supplies as well as processes required purchasing documents and records as needed
7. Reads and interprets instruction manuals, blueprints, drawings, manuals, etc.
8. Completes time entry and work orders.  Completes all job paperwork including job planning, records of parts used and work completed.
9. Participates with plant management in daily and outage work planning, scheduling, and prioritization and contributes to annual budget cycle in mechanical area.
10. Must have the ability to communicate intelligently with plant personnel, both verbally and in writing.  Instructs and trains personnel in areas of expertise, and is instructor certified.
11. Performs minor shop cleaning, housekeeping, and material stock oversight.
12. Complies with applicable Company, OSHA and other governmental regulations and/or policies.
13. Responds to call outs and travel to other plants as a Machinist when required.
Works in and around: energized and/or rotating equipment, automatic start equipment, low ambient light, confined spaces, vibrating equipment, heights, ladders and scaffolding, noise levels requiring ear protection, presence of fumes, chemicals, lead and dust, requiring use of respirator, and works in temperature ranges from approximately -20 to 110 degrees F. Floors are often concrete with dust, small debris and standing water. Outdoor work is often on gravel, and/or uneven surfaces including snow and ice.  Must be capable of lifting 50 lbs.



1. Will be required to actively participate in training and retraining programs established for this position as determined by management, including assisting with training and qualifying of other personnel.
2. Must demonstrate and maintain classification proficiency as determined by management.  Will be required to demonstrate proficiency through periodic on-the-job assessments and evaluations.
3. Will be required to direct various maintenance jobs as assigned by plant management.
4. Will be required to function under written plant operating and maintenance procedures as appropriate, assist in their preparation and document records as required by management.
5. Will be required to perform duties when necessary from scaffoldings and catwalks in high and confined areas.
6. May be required to accept temporary assignments at other plants as a Machinist as prescribed by the Plant Management.

7. Will be required to have or obtain general mechanical repair skills equivalent to repairman skills as outlined in the attached repairman task list (Attachment 3).
NOTE: The above list is not all-inclusive.  Other Mechanical Technician job duties or requirements may be required, as management deems necessary.
