Director, Utility Accounting Job

Position Summary
Provide senior financial and technical accounting leadership for Xcel Energy operating utilities. Responsible for all facets of accounting from energy procurement & trading, cost analysis, clause and rider mechanisms, retail and wholesale revenue and overall margin analysis. Effectively communicates with Executive Management and senior Operating Utility leadership. Partner with Regulatory Affairs and provide expert testimony on a variety of rate-regulated revenue and cost of service matters.
Essential Responsibilities
  • Accounting Management: Senior accounting leader for one or more Xcel Energy Operating Utilities. Oversee a timely and accurate accounting close each month. Partner with the Chief Accounting Officer, the Assistant Controller and others to establish, recommend, administer and manage accounting and tax policies and procedures for Xcel Energy and its subsidiaries.
  • Energy Accounting, Trading & Reporting: Direct the accounting of energy purchases (primarily electricity, coal, natural gas), deliveries to/from inventory, trading activities (physical & financial hedges and Renewable Energy Credits, SO2/NOx allowances), energy payments/settlements and wholesale revenue. Effectively manage all back-office accounting and reporting activities and coordinate with front and mid-office functions to maintain compliance with corporate-wide risk management operations. Oversee accounting operations within organized regional electricity markets where developed (MISO, SPP and others).
  • Regulatory Accounting & Reporting: Direct the review and approval of accounting for fuel clause mechanisms (ECA, FCA, PCCA) and other rate riders to provide for a matching of revenue with state & federal regulatory cost recovery. Oversee all joint venture accounting with Audit Committee participation/leadership where required. Responsible for regulatory accounting and reporting including the build of the regulatory ledger, FERC & State PUC reporting, jurisdictional analysis/earnings and expert testimony, as needed.
  • Financial Analysis & Reporting: Provide direct leadership, both managerial and technical, for financial performance reporting to support management decision-making. Evaluate actual results, provide budget and forecast information, as a key assumption owner and communicate financial results to Executive Management and senior Operating Company leadership.
  • Financial Systems & Processes: Plan, implement and monitor financial information systems and business processes to ensure accuracy and timeliness of accounting and financial data.
  • Staff Development: Provide direction, guidance & oversight to managers/staff, as needed. Direct and manage the development of team goals and communicate company objectives. Create a team environment of continuous improvement and learning to foster professional development. Establish and communicate clear performance expectations. Conduct formal and informal performance discussions. Coach and mentor team members or others in accounting.
Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or related business field.
  • 10 years of accounting experience with a minimum of 5 years of management experience required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, regulated utility industry accounting & reporting and Sarbanes-Oxley compliance & reporting.
Preferred Requirements
  • BPA experience is desirable.
  • MBA
  • CPA

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $136,000 to $192,666 per year
