Manager, Fleet Engineering - Controls Job

Xcel Energy is seeking a Manager, Fleet Engineering focusing on Controls to support our Performance Optimization group in Energy Supply. This position can be based in any of the following locations: Henderson, CO; Minneapolis, MN; Amarillo, TX; Lubbock, TX. 

 

Additional Responsibilities

  1.   Engineer and implement security solutions in support of business unit projects and in alignment with Xcel Energy strategic plans and architecture.
  2. Drive and educate on security architecture, processes, concepts, and best practices.
  3.    Perform technical security research, analysis, and evaluation of new and existing technology supporting the business.  Stay current on relevant security topics and technologies.  Partners with Enterprise Security and Emergency Management and other internal and external partners to ensure security of business processes and systems.

 

Position Summary
Leads and manages a Fleet Engineering team in one of the following specialty areas: Electric/Controls/Generators, Boiler/HRSG/Balance of Plant/AQCS, Steam/Combustion Turbines, or Materials. Implements Long-Term Asset Maintenance (LTAM) strategy across the fleet to drive systematic improvement in fleet performance while lowering the total cost to produce energy. Leads the implementation of fleet best practices into routine work practices and programs across the fleet. Is accountable for equipment, system, and plant performance results.


Essential Responsibilities

  • Provides technical expertise and leadership to Energy Supply Generation fleet to solve complex plant technical issues not solved by on-site generation or Reliability Engineering staff. Ensures resources are deployed to address engineering issues in a timely, efficient, and cost effective manner. Responsible for fleet wide system management, system improvement initiatives, long-term system maintenance planning, and system budget development/ management aligned with fuel type strategies. Is accountable for system performance results across the fleet.
  • Develops strategies by fuel type and common systems/components based upon business unit asset strategy, centralized data, detailed analytics, and technical expertise. Implements the Long-Term Asset Maintenance (LTAM) strategies for Energy Supply. Directs team to perform equipment inspections, testing, and provide documentation to meet all regulatory and business requirements. Decides the scope and timing of major equipment maintenance, repairs, replacements, and/or upgrades with team input. Develops planned overhaul work scopes based upon fleet asset strategy and condition based performance results. Partners with the Projects organization on overhaul scope changes and provides overhaul project lead support as required.
  • Identifies and deploys system/component improvement initiatives to decrease the total cost of energy. Drives standardization and the consistent deployment of lessons learned and best practices. Leads Continuous Improvement (CI) initiatives, projects, and ideas to achieve continuous improvement. Performs routine CI deep dives at each plant to maximize value added.
  • Clearly communicates performance expectations and work assignments to align team to business goals/objectives. Develops a culture of high performance, personal accountability, and continuous improvement. Hires, trains, develops, coaches, and manages performance of staff to ensure personnel are adequately trained to work safely and effectively.


Minimum Requirements

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited college/university
  • Minimum of 8 years of directly-related education and/or experience may be considered in lieu of the degree requirement
  • 10 years of experience in operation and maintenance of power plant equipment
  • Strong analytical, process, and decision making skills
  • Ability to systematically identify, assess, and manage risk to meet business needs.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • 3 years of previous leadership experience is preferred
  • Proven ability to manage geographically dispersed work groups of different disciplines
  • Ability to handle multiple and competing priorities required.
  • Must be able to lead cultural change
  • Travel of up to 25% required

 

Preferred

  • Experience with distributed control systems (DCS), supervisory data control and acquisition (SCADA), ICS systems and environments.
  • Understanding of communication protocols common to ICS environments.
  • Previous experience with cyber security and threat management aspects of operational technology (OT)/ICS systems.
  • Understanding of threats, vulnerabilities, and exploits in ICS environments and appropriate mitigation techniques.
  • Experience with or exposure to industry cyber security requirements such as NERC CIP, CISA CFATS, NRC, etc. 
  • Security certification such as CISSP, GIAC, SANS ICS, GICSP, etc is desired.

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $94,500 to $134,166 per year
