Position Summary

Provide overall management and direction in the areas of accounting and financial reporting (internal and external), with primary focus on Xcel accounting operations. Provide leadership in the interpretation of accounting information from the Natural Chart of Accounts to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commissions’ Uniform System of Accounts. With the other Corporate Accounting departments, lead Company personnel in understanding and complying with the processes, which facilitate the achievement of Xcel Energy's financial goals and objectives.

 

Essential Responsibilities

  • Ensure the timely and accurate accounting close each month using the General Ledger system and confirming appropriate pass-through to the regulatory ledger. Through review of activity and results, decide whether or not to record last minute transactions. Maintain detailed on-line financial statements summarizing actual operating results and balances.
  • Coordinate and oversee financial analysis at the financial statement and element levels. Provide explanations and analysis to senior management regarding the nature and cause of budget deviations on a monthly basis. Project impact of deviations on the outlook for the remainder of the year.
  • Assist and direct staff in preparation of various mandatory external financial reports of the Company to FERC, state regulators and shareholders and others. Ensure compliance with various reporting and accounting requirements for such reports. Provide support to external auditors as necessary.
  • Ensure the development of the business unit financial statements in accordance with Company and regulatory requirements. Provide on a timely basis to operating personnel reports summarizing actual results vs. budget levels.
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of emerging accounting issues. Ensure completion of all accounting research including accounting adjustments necessary. Provide consultative resource to all departments, business units and subsidiaries for upcoming accounting issues and impact of proposed transactions and developments. Coordinate Company response and implementation of new accounting requirements.
  • Provide expert testimony and responses to financial data requests from regulators and interveners in connection with periodic rate filings of the Company. Prepare accounting information, reports, financial data and regulatory filings to facilitate rate case proceedings and inquiries.
  • Assess and develop the qualifications and proficiency of the department's employees through technical guidance, training programs, on-the-job coaching, and mentoring. Provide human resource management by being responsible for hiring/firing, salary change recommendations, employee discipline, performance review, career coaching and development, etc. Design and instruct in-house accounting and financial training for any areas of the Company who express an interest.

 

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or equivalent.
  • At least seven years’ experience in various job-related areas such as accounting, financial analysis, reporting, budgeting, and business and strategic planning.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and FERC regulatory accounting requirements.
  • This position requires the ability to effectively use computer financial systems, Microsoft Office Suite, demonstrated planning, analytical, problem solving skills and ability to work extended hours.

 

Preferred

  • MBA and/or CPA preferred.
  • Management experience preferred
