Technical Writing Intern Job

During COVID-19 Pandemic this position may require the ability to temporarily work remote within the company service territory until company protocol dictates return to the office criteria has been met. Once approved to return to the office, the work location is our office in downtown Minneapolis, MN or Denver, Colorado. Eligible candidates must be live within the Minneapolis, MN or Denver, Colorado area to be considered. Candidates must be able to commute to the worksite wihtin a reasonable amount of time (an hour or less).

The intern is expected to work full-time in the summer (40 hours/week) with the possibility to extend the internship into the fall working part-time (8-15 hours/week) during the school year.

Position Summary

Xcel Energy’s Transmission and Substation Standards organization is hiring a technical intern for summer 2021.  The Transmission Standards Department is responsible for developing specifications for the engineering, construction, and procurement of the bulk electric system. The intern position job duties will be comprised of editorial support for transmission and substation standards.  The successful candidate will utilize and become familiar with a wide array of tools to manage multiple thousand-page documents including Visual Basic for applications, Office Open XML, MathML, JavaScript, and other collaboration platforms used within the industry.

 

Essential Responsibilities

  • Data-entry: updating meta-data, creating bibliographies, maintaining a library of files.
  • Copy-editing: proofreading, ensuring consistency and enforcing a style guide, developing templates, identifying gaps and duplications.
  • Content creation: interviewing subject matter experts, documenting existing procedures, collecting user feedback

 

Minimum Requirements

 

  • Sophomore or above as of the spring 2021
  • Must be enrolled in an accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in: writing, communications, literature, library science, or a related field
  • Must be able to work 40 hours per week in the summer
  • Ability to work part-time (8-15 hours/week) during the school year
  • Fluency with the Chicago Manual of Style
  • Fluency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Fluency with Adobe Acrobat Pro 2017

 

Preferred Requirements

  • Course work in data administration concepts, computer information systems, and a desire to work in a highly technical environment.

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $17.40 - $20.40 per hour
