NSP Transmission Planning Engineering Intern (Sophomore or Higher) Job

Xcel Energy is hiring an Engineering Intern to work at our Downtown Minneapolis location. This internship is full-time during the summer (40 hours per week ) with the option to work part-time during the school year (8+ hours/week) and . The ideal candidate will be a Sophomore or above pursuing an Electrical Engineering degree, with preference will be given to local candidates.

 

Position Summary

This position will assist Transmission Planning Engineers in the analysis of the power system's performance. This work will entail performing power flow (steady state) and stability (dynamic) computer simulations of the power grid, creating models to simulate system conditions/events, compiling diagrams, tables and reports of results for internal and external use, and other related activities. The Engineering Intern will be expected to develop an understanding of basic concepts of power system analysis, become proficient at accurately preparing and running system simulations, and as experience is gained, independently performing area system planning studies. This role will also involve exposure to regional meetings, joint planning, and regulatory activities.

 

Minimum Requirements 

  • Must be enrolled in an ABET Accredited Electrical Engineering Program (BSEE)
  • A sophomore level or above
  • Ability to work full time during the summer
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to communicate effectively; both written and verbally 
  • Must be self- motivated, have good mechanical aptitude, and ability to work well with others

 

Preferred

  • Course work in power generation or project management and an interest in the power industry is desirable
  • Ability to work part-time during the school year
  • Local student preferred

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $20.70 per hour
