Project Description:
Work with the Integrated System Planning – Gas Modeling & Analytics staff to support the build and verification of gas hydraulic models across our natural gas service territory.
You will work as an Engineering Intern completing tasks that support the tools, programs, and data sets used to update gas system hydraulic models utilized for gas emergency response, gas operations, and gas system planning. Through practical field and office experience and mentoring, the successful candidates will gain significant professional confidence, specifically in gas system hydraulic modeling, utility planning, enterprise data management, as well as communication skills.
Typical intern responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
- Under the direction of higher-level engineer or supervisor: performs gas model development, model verification, and analysis using Synergi Gas or similar software
- Develops documentation and may assist with the development of modeling procedures and training materials
- Development of technical skillsets in gas system modeling, data management, and investigating model discrepancies
- Explores or implements new processes and automation tools to improve model accuracy, usability, and traceability
This position is for a June 1st, 2026 start. These positions may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship’s initial term based on the candidate’s successful performance and Xcel’s business needs.
Minimum Requirements
- Current student, Junior status (as of May 2026) or higher
- Enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Engineering and/or Physics
- Able to commute to the Lipan Distribution (1123 W 3rd Ave) office in Denver, Colorado, or the Rice Street Service Center (825 Rice St) office in St. Paul, Minnesota. Non-local residents will not be considered.
- Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)/ part time during the fall (up to 20 hours a week).
Preferred Qualifications
- 3.0 GPA (out of a 4.0 scale) or higher
- Course experience in fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, or gas systems
- Strong data management and analysis skills (e.g. Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets)
- Experience with scripting or building automations (e.g. Python, SQL, Excel VBA)
- Familiarity with Synergi Gas or similar hydraulic modeling software
