Position Summary

Xcel Energy is seeking a talented and experienced Strategy Consultant to join our Integrated System Planning organization. In this role, you will be instrumental in shaping our Grid of the Future Strategy essential to facilitating and leading the clean energy transition. The role will be directly responsible for shaping how we plan for the future of an integrated energy system. The consultant will collaborate and work cross-functionally with key teams including Distribution System Planning to develop and refine Xcel Energy's Grid of the Future Strategy, aligning with company strategy, regulatory requirements, and evolving industry drivers. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in strategy consulting, deep knowledge of the energy industry, intellectual curiosity, and a passion for driving positive change in the utility sector.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Strategic: Provides guidance to leaders on identifying goals to be achieved by the business area. Works with leaders to facilitate the process to create an implementation plan in alignment with other functions in the business area, and monitor effectiveness.

  • Strategic Planning: Support the strategic planning processes and implementation of the overall business area strategy and operational plans.

  • Communication: Responsible for ensuring the effective delivery of strategic communications around all business area activities. Aligns business area communications with overall company messaging and objectives.

  • Project Management: Plan, manage, coordinate or participate on cross-functional teams or projects for business area or companywide initiatives.

  • Analytics/Metrics: Leverages business area systems and data to identify, develop and deliver impactful metrics and other analytics and/or automated solutions. Consults with leaders in the development of metrics to be used in conjunction with decision making for strategy development and planning. Develops benchmarking and reporting data to ensure consistent processes are followed.

  • Budget Management: Provides guidance to leaders within the business area on various aspects of the budget process. Supports initiatives that result in improvements related to the budget process.

  • Performs business environment scans to identify events and trends of strategic significance and to create understanding of technologies, peer companies, and industry dynamics. Creates and publishes the Utility Industry Review monthly and other reports to apprise management and the Board of Directors. Research and compiles results for confidential information requests, company profiles, and strategic analysis for executives. Researches, analyzes, and creates comparison studies, such as utility rankings and corporate efficiency metrics. Ensures business intelligence supports key decisions and negotiations.

  • Facilitates cross-functional and inter-industry efforts to design and implement emerging business opportunities and business development initiatives, such as Energy Policy Act and battery storage. Identifies, investigates, and solves business planning, strategic planning and reporting issues.

  • Facilitates various executive leadership council meetings. Works directly with executive leadership to identify issues and desired outcomes. Articulates objectives and develops agendas to ensure effective implementation and execution of business plans, operating plans, and strategic initiatives.


Consultant Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in business, finance, accounting or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • MBA preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years utility or energy business experience with exposure to multiple business functions.
  • Detailed knowledge of Xcel Energy business functions desirable.
  • Emphasis on strategy and business planning and process design and implementation.
  • Project management experience desirable.
  • Some travel.

Pay Range for this level is: $105,600.00 to $150,000.00

Manager Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Engineering, Economics or related discipline and/or a combination of education and experience providing equivalent knowledge.
  • Advanced degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of accounting, budgeting and financial forecasting procedures and systems.
  • Ten or more years of utility, financial analysis, and/or regulatory experience
  • Demonstrated experience in business and operational performance measures, scorecards, managing projects and budgets.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience facilitating, implementing and administering business plans, performance management and process improvement programs.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be proficient at database and personal computer analytics and reporting tools.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to implement projects that cross organizations, business units and professional disciplines, supporting culture change.

Pay Range for this level is: $122,00.00 to $173,933.00

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with distribution system planning principles, including but not limited to load forecasting, asset management, grid optimization, and DER (Distributed Energy Resources) integration and management.
  • Understanding of distribution system reliability standards, performance metrics, and best practices in distribution system planning and operations.
  • Ability to translate technical concepts and insights into strategic recommendations and actionable plans for enhancing the performance and resilience of distribution networks.
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and collaborate with cross-functional teams, influencing stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
  • Experience conducting research and analysis to identify emerging technologies, regulatory developments, and market dynamics that impact grid modernization efforts.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to effectively convey complex concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Passion for sustainability and innovation, with a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing the energy industry in the transition to a clean energy future.

Non-Bargaining

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $105,600.00 to $150,000.00 per year
