Position Summary

This position oversees the accounting and reporting for commercial and regulatory accounting activities and supervises accounting staff. This includes the settlement, accounting, regulatory deferral, recovery and reporting for fuel commodity procurement and transport, purchase power transactions, trading, and rate case activities. The position reviews new transactions and business opportunities related to Commercial Operations and Regulatory activities to ensure compliance with GAAP, regulatory guidelines, and the proper implementation of any new procedures or systems required to support the new initiatives. The position participates extensively in regulatory proceedings and works closely with senior management in the implementation of regulatory and operational strategies/directives.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Works closely with Commercial Ops, Regulatory and CFO Sr Mgmt/teams to ensure accounting support for new transactions and business opportunities and implements new systems or cross departmental processes to support business needs. Provides financial support and expertise.
  • Provides support and/or expert testimony and responses to financial data requests from regulators and interveners related to regulatory filings. Assists in preparation of various external reports such as the SEC 10K/Q or FERC Form 1. Works closely with mgmt in the development of regulatory strategy and in quantifying/analyzing financial information as a result of those strategies.
  • Responsible for all operating company wholesale gross margin analysis, margin calculations including cost allocation, cost of goods sold analysis, derivative, and deferred accounting. Maintains an in-depth knowledge of accounting issues as they relate to Commercial Ops and Regulatory initiatives and provides accounting and financial expertise.
  • Participates extensively in the month-end close process. Directs the compilation of month-end margin estimates and works closely with the Commercial Ops and Regulatory groups to ensure estimates are accurately completed within specified deadlines. Oversees the analysis of variances between estimated and actual results and ensures review. Reviews month-end journal entries prepared by staff and ensures all accounting reports are complete and accurate and tie out to the general ledger. Ensures the proper cost allocation of gas, fuels and purchase power to the appropriate plant/assets and trading activities and the appropriate deferral and recovery of costs.
  • Directs, supervises, and develops a staff of accountants and analysts. Provides training and development. Delegates workload effectively to ensure all responsibilities are completed and deadlines are met. Develops and implements departmental policies and procedures. Provides direction and completes employee evaluations. Provides expertise on various accounting/operational systems and is knowledgeable with the overall systematic flow of information.
  • Works to improve and streamline accounting processes and practices. Keeps up-to-date with new accounting regulations and trends.


Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; preferably in Business, Accounting or Finance and minimum 7 years accounting experience.
  • CPA or advanced degree strongly preferred.
  • Must have exposure/experience in accounting for at least one of the following areas: energy transactions, trading transactions, or accounting in a regulated environment.
  • Minimum 4-5 years of experience in a managerial accounting role.
  • Must have advanced system skills, ability to lead and direct others, excellent analytic and problem solving skills and experience in general ledger closings.
  • Must be able to demonstrate an overall understanding of financial and physical energy markets and be able to thoroughly analyze gross margins.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and meet strict deadlines. Requires occasional travel and extended work hours.

Non-Bargaining

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $109,500.00 to $155,500.00 per year
