Position Summary
Provide leadership, direction, and is accountable for a highly skilled team of engineering subject matter experts in all jurisdictions for Materials Engineering. Provide effective oversight and management of programs, processes, and activities regarding federal, state, and safety compliance programs within Energy Supply. Ensure implementation of long-term asset maintenance strategies across the fleet to drive systematic improvement in fleet performance. Ensure consistent implementation of fleet best practices into routine work practices and programs to drive sustainable and effective improvement in business performance results. Is accountable for equipment, system, and plant performance results.
Leads and manages the Materials Engineering team for Energy Supply (ES), which provides technical direction in materials engineering, welding engineering, non-destructive examination, codes and standards, plant life management, and equipment repair recommendations. Develops, implements, and continuously improves Materials standards and practices. Ensures compliance with state and federal repair codes and standards.
Essential Responsibilities
Manage a geographically dispersed team of engineering and technical experts to solve complex plant technical and regulatory issues not solved by on-site generation or Reliability Engineering staff. Ensure resources are deployed to address engineering issues in a timely, efficient, and cost-effective manner. Is accountable for system performance results across the fleet.
Manage subject matter experts to meet regulatory requirements and solve complex regulatory issues. Accountable for adherence and execution of operating company regulatory compliance required including NERC, FERC, CIP, National Board, MACT, MATS and their regional and state delegates including MRO, SPP, WECC. Actively participate and lead participation with regulating authorities.
Develop multi-jurisdictional asset strategies by common systems/components based upon business unit asset strategy, centralized data, detailed analytics, and technical expertise. Direct team to perform equipment inspections, testing, and provide documentation to meet all regulatory and business requirements. Determine scope and timing of major equipment maintenance, repairs, replacements, and/or upgrades with team input for all of Energy Supply. Develop planned overhaul work scope based upon fleet asset strategy and condition-based performance results. Partner with the Projects organization on overhaul scope changes and provides overhaul project lead support as required.
Identify and deploy system/component improvement initiatives to decrease the total cost of energy. Drive standardization and the consistent deployment of lessons learned and best practices. Lead Continuous Improvement (CI) initiatives, projects, and ideas to achieve continuous improvement. Perform routine CI deep dives at each plant to maximize value added.
Partner with Energy Supply Projects to implement and enforce technical standards for current and future technologies. Manage subject matter expertise to coordinate technical decisions on major and base projects.
Develop, recruit, select, and retain Energy Supply and industry- wide subject matter experts Communicates performance expectations and work assignments to align team to business goals/objectives. Develops and sustains a culture of high performance, personal accountability, and continuous improvement.
Develop and maintain multi-jurisdictional knowledge, expertise, and relationships in regulatory and economic environments for all three Operating Companies. Utilize these skills to appropriately coordinate Energy Supply technical activities throughout all Xcel Energy regions.
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited college/university. Minimum of 8 years of directly related education and/or experience may be considered in lieu of the degree requirement. 10 years of experience in operation and maintenance of power plant equipment. Strong analytical, process, and decision-making skills. Ability to systematically identify, assess, and manage risk to meet business needs. Strong written and verbal communication skills. 3 years of previous leadership experience is preferred. Proven ability to manage geographically dispersed work groups of different disciplines. Ability to handle multiple and competing priorities required. Must be able to lead cultural change. Travel up to 25% required.
Preferred Experience
Experience with code repair services, welding programs, metallurgy services, and use of materials laboratories.
Managing high-energy steam components and associated failure modes (pressure vessels, steam drums, heavy-wall headers, seamed piping, high energy piping hangers, flow accelerated corrosion, etc.)
Management of non-destructive examination programs (NDE).
Compliance with repair codes used by Energy Supply to perform certifiable repairs to high-energy systems and equipment, including development and maintenance of a weld manual in compliance with state and national regulations
Expertise working with regulatory agencies

Non-Bargaining
The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $122,000.00 to $173,933.00 per year
