The Renewable Operation Center (ROC) is seeking a highly analytical, detail‑oriented, and self‑motivated intern with a strong interest in renewable energy to support Xcel’s rapidly growing renewable generation fleet. This role offers hands‑on exposure to real‑time operations, data‑driven decision‑making, and site performance optimization across utility‑scale renewable assets.

The intern will work closely with ROC Operators and the ROC Analytics team to support daily operations and drive continuous improvement initiatives. Key responsibilities include assisting with the development of a daily operational morning report that supports both on‑site teams and ROC personnel, performing quantitative and trend‑based analysis to enable proactive work management, and leveraging predictive analytics tools to recommend data‑driven adjustments to site maintenance and operational strategies.

In addition, the intern will contribute to the design and enhancement of visual and interactive dashboards used by the ROC to identify performance trends, operational risks, and optimization opportunities across the fleet. The role also includes supporting the Senior ROC Analyst in the development and maintenance of databases to enable scalable analytics and collaboration between operations and engineering teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support analytical and operational initiatives under the guidance of the ROC Sr. Ops Manager and Sr. Analyst.

  • Collaborate with ROC Operators, ROC Analysts, onsite operations, engineering, IT support teams, transmission, and renewable operations leadership to support performance improvement initiatives by assisting with the implementation of technical efficiencies.

  • Assist the ROC Senior Analyst with data software service initiatives, helping ensure Renewable Operations can deliver accurate and timely reports to internal and external stakeholders.

  • Help collect, validate, and organize operational data used for reporting, trend analysis, and post-event reviews.

  • Assist the Senior ROC Analyst with trend analysis and reporting to identify and escalate potential indicators of equipment degradation to ROC Operators and onsite leadership.

  • Support the ROC’s preparation for future renewable growth by assisting with database organization, participating in local plant SCADA testing activities, and helping to maintain operational reports.

  • Support the generation of daily, weekly, and monthly regulatory and operational metric reporting under the direction of the Senior ROC Analyst.

  • Participate in team meetings, brainstorming sessions, and project planning with internal and external stakeholders.

This position is for a June 1, 2026 start date. This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship’s initial term based on the candidate’s successful performance and Xcel Energy’s business needs.

This internship offers a flexible schedule of 24–40 hours per week, Monday through Friday. Interns are expected to work on-site on the days they are scheduled.

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Economics, Engineering, Finance, Information Systems, Mathematics, Statistics or related technical degrees.

  • Undergraduate student pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree with a junior- or senior‑level academic standing entering Fall 2026.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Demonstrates strong technical skills through coursework and extracurricular clubs.

  • Ability to learn Microsoft Excel, Python, Java, VBA, SQL, R, PowerBI, renewable plant SCADA Systems, and network/communication systems.

  • Analytical and inquisitive mindset with a commitment to detail and continuous learning.

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a fast‑paced team environment.

Learning Opportunities

  • Gain hands-on experience working within a Renewable Operation Center (ROC) supporting wind, solar, and battery assets.

Non-Bargaining

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $20.90 to $22.10 per hour

This position is eligible for the following benefits: Pension, 401(k) plan, Paid time off (PTO), Holidays
