Position Summary: 
This position will be responsible for leading the delivery / execution of Xcel Energy’s large project portfolio, driving project performance to achieve the company’s strategic objective in the Clean Energy Transition. This position will coordinate with the executive team and key business leaders in ISP, Finance (CFO), OpCo Presidents, Operations and Supply Chain to orchestrate projects from the development stage to the end of construction, ensuring effective operations from those installed projects as a top quartile asset. The person will be fully responsible for leading a team of project professionals, (internal employees as well as external FTE support) driving high performance and managing relationships with key EPC’s and strategic suppliers integrating with Xcel for achieving the enterprise / project objectives.   

Essential Responsibilities:

  •  Ensure safety performance of all Xcel employees and subcontractors utilizing the "Safety Always" programmatic principles and philosophy. 

  •  Leading end-to-end project development and execution activities via the Xcel stage gate process between ISP, Operations Supply chain and Finance.

  • Managing the performance of the project portfolio including establishing and monitoring project key performance indicators (KPI’s) across safety, quality, cost, schedule, and risk; identify continuous improvement opportunities with a solution focused mindset.

  • Ensuring appropriate reporting structures and accurate forecasting methodologies are used to create project transparency, risk mitigation, reliability, and accuracy.  Build and develop a strong team, centered around XE vision, values, and culture.

  • Managing communications with the operating company jurisdictional presidents and other stakeholders, including contractors and suppliers, to secure capacity to deliver the portfolio of projects.

  • Ensuring active quality management including appropriate approaches and procedures are in place that deliver facilities that achieve target output.

  • Establishing visual management dashboards of projects and the aggregate portfolio of projects for the executive committee and board of directors.

  • Management of the major projects group (a combined group of Xcel and contractor partner employees) including defining the organization structure, defining roles, and identification of capability gaps and approach to close.

  • Ensure EPC partners follow standards, processes, governance and maintain appropriate staff to meet capital project deadlines, metrics, and remain in scope, on budget all while ensuring and following safety standards.

  • Ensure major projects follow rigorous standards as set by the Central Program Office (CPO) with consistent review, update, and feedback to ensure best in class performance and compliance.  Accountable for managing all CPO standards and processes for construction and safety on capital projects.

  • Ensuring project specific governance communications are appropriately handled internally across business units and cross functional support organizations.

  • Communicating and engaging with organized labor Unions (IBEW / local trades) as appropriate and necessary.

  • Assume roles as subject matter expert for rate case and other fillings with the stage utilities commissions. 

Minimum Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or construction management or equivalent experience.

  • 20+ years of relevant project execution, operations experience in the industry with a strong commercial thinking approach to projects. 

  • Significant demonstrated experience interfacing with senior stakeholders (BOD, executive team, regulatory, government).

  • Significant demonstrated experience with EPC contracts, claims management and contract management.

  • Track record of successfully leading multiple large-scale projects (multi Billion) including leading project excellence across a project portfolio.

  •  Track record of safely delivering high quality projects on-time and on-budget.

  • Experience with large utility scale projects in the United States working holding to account large scale EPC contractors as full-service providers. 

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain programmatic performance overview with capability to collaboratively deep dive and resolve project specific challenges.

  • Strong analytical skills enabling transparency into actual portfolio performance.

  • Demonstrated mentoring and coaching skills focused on developing people.

  • Strong leadership skills and sufficient breadth of experience.

Non-Bargaining

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $250,000.00 to $300,000.00 per year
