Position Summary

Assess and predict weather conditions that contribute to the ignition, spread, and behavior of wildfires. Utilize weather expertise and technical skills to develop and implement strategies to support Xcel Energy’s Wildfire Mitigation plans.  Provide essential meteorological insights including potentially statistical skills that guide wildfire prevention, response, and management efforts. Effectively communicate high impact weather events that may increase wildfire risks.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Fire Weather Monitoring: Monitor and analyze weather patterns, including temperature, humidity, wind speed, and precipitation to identify conditions conducive to wildfire ignition and spread.
  • Modeling and Prediction: Collect, process, and analyze meteorological and fire danger data from various sources, including surface observations and wildland fire databases. Utilize programming skills to collect, analyze, and display this information as needed.  Utilize fire behavior models and historical data to predict fire growth, intensity, and direction. Provide real-time information to support firefighting efforts.
  • Risk Assessment: Assess wildfire risks associated with Xcel Energy’s infrastructure, transmission lines, and substations. Identify vulnerable areas and develop mitigation plans.
  • Early Warning Systems: Collaborate with emergency response teams to develop early warning systems for wildfire events. Provide timely alerts and recommendations based on meteorological data.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with government agencies, fire departments, and other stakeholders to coordinate wildfire prevention and response strategies.
  • Education and Outreach: Educate internal teams, field personnel, and the public about fire weather conditions, safety protocols, and best practices.
  • Research and Innovation: Stay informed about advancements in wildfire meteorology, climate change impacts, and technology. Contribute to research projects and implement innovative solutions.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in meteorology, atmospheric science, or related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Previous experience in wildfire meteorology or fire behavior modeling.
  •  Minimum of 3 years of experience in wildfire meteorology, weather forecasting, weather modeling, or related experience.  
  • Experience with meteorological modeling tools, GIS software, and remote sensing tool.  
  • Working knowledge of Python, R, Power BI, SQL preferred.
  • Strong analytical skills to interpret complex weather data. Excellent communication skills to convey weather-related information effectively.
  •  Knowledge of wildfire management protocols and emergency response procedures.
  • Certification from the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) or similar organization is preferred.

Non-Bargaining

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $92,300.00 to $130,566.66 per year
