Maintenance Repairman Apprentice - Bayfront Steam Plant - Ashland, WI

We anticipate the need for one or more Apprentice Maintenance Repairman to be located at the Bayfront Steam Plant in Ashland, WI. The minimum starting (Step 1 – 60%) rate of pay for this position is $32.19 hourly. The position will be posted for 15 Working Days from May 12, 2026, to June 2, 2026. Candidate skills and qualifications will be evaluated and, in conformity to union contract, appropriate step placement will be offered to a successful candidate.
Pay may also be adjusted in conformity with union contract, but in no case will it be less than the negotiated step minimum. Minimum apprentice pay levels as a percentage of base Journeyman Maintenance Repairman pay:
1st Step: 60%
2nd Step: 65%
3rd Step: 70%
4th Step: 75%
5th Step: 80%
6th Step: 85%
7th Step: 90%
8th Step: 95%
Summary
Assist in the maintenance and inspection of boilers, turbine generators, and auxiliary equipment.
Bay Front is a two unit generating station that has become a model for the creative use of fuels, including renewable resources. Two units burn a variety of fuels to produce steam that drives two turbine generators to produce electricity. The Repairman Apprentice will assist in the maintenance and inspection of boilers, turbine generators, and auxiliary equipment. The duties for this role will require working in confined spaces and working from elevated heights (scaffolding and floor grating). Additionally, the Repairman Apprentice will work in varying climatic conditions, in order to work on equipment that is outdoors. Job responsibilities will also include removal of asbestos; therefore, the Repairman Apprentice will be required to complete asbestos removal training/certification.
Required
High school graduate or equivalent
Additional experience or education, such as a technical, vocational or Associate’s degree, in mechanics, and/or basic electric fundamentals in generation, and/or power house operating procedures and fundamentals is desired
Certification in asbestos removal desired
Must be able to work in confined spaces and varying climatic conditions, includes working at elevated heights from scaffolding and floor grating
Must be able to lift and maneuver up to 50 pounds
Must be able to work with limited supervision, to implement direction from designated lead
Commitment to successful participation and advancement in apprenticeship program
Must pass physical and pulmonary function test and abide by respirator policy
Must be committed to working safely and compliance with all company safety rules
Mining and/or welding experience preferred
