We anticipate the need for one or more Quality Control Inspector(s) at our Prairie Island Nuclear Plant in Welch, MN. The starting rate of pay for this position is $42.32 to $65.11 hourly once fully qualified. This position will be posted for 10 Working days from May 13, 2026, to May 27, 2026.

Performs independent Quality Control (QC) inspections and quality receipt inspections at nuclear generating sites and approved nuclear suppliers to verify compliance with regulatory, licensing, and Quality Assurance Program requirements. The QC Inspector applies inspection hold points, task performance inspections and task monitoring using approved inspection criteria to confirm that work activities, materials, and components meet established acceptance criteria. 

The QC Inspector documents inspection results, identifies inspection discrepancies and initiates corrective actions in accordance with fleet procedures. The role requires independence, technical judgment, and clear communication to ensure work affecting  structures, systems, and components is performed in compliance with governing requirements. 

Essential Responsibilities 

Inspection Performance & Authority 

  • Perform independent QC inspections for maintenance, modifications, construction, special processes, and work activities affecting structures, systems, and components. 

  • Apply inspection hold points to prevent work progression until applicable inspection acceptance criteria are met. 

  • Ensure code‑related and regulatory commitment inspection points are performed in accordance with fleet requirements and not waived. 

  • Perform inspections using approved work orders, procedures, inspection planning matrices, and documented acceptance criteria. 

  • Ability to meet the physical requirements necessary to perform inspections, for example climbing ladders, variations in environmental conditions, etc.

Inspection Planning & Work Order Review 

  • Review work orders, work plans, procedures, and instructions for maintenance and design changes affecting systems, structures, and components to verify required inspection points, acceptance criteria, and hold points are properly incorporated. 

  • Verify inspection attributes align with established inspection planning criteria and applicable codes, standards, and commitments. 

  • Coordinate with Planning, Engineering, Maintenance, and Nuclear Oversight to resolve inspection planning gaps prior to work execution. 

Quality Receipt Inspection 

  • Perform quality receipt inspections of materials and services. 

  • Verify Certificates of Conformance/Compliance, procurement requirements, approved supplier status, and traceability documentation. 

  • Perform standard and special receipt inspections, including identification of suspect, counterfeit, or fraudulent items. 

  • Document receipt inspection results and ensure acceptance, conditional release, or rejection is processed in accordance with procurement QA procedures. 

Documentation & Corrective Action 

  • Document inspection results, comments, and verification of acceptance criteria in work orders, inspection records, and receipt inspection documentation. 

  • Identify inspection discrepancies, missed inspections, or non‑conforming conditions and initiate documentation in the Corrective Action Program (CAP) as required. 

  • Notify appropriate supervision and stakeholders of inspection discrepancies and support resolution. 

Professional Conduct & Communication 

  • Maintain independence, objectivity, and professional judgment consistent with Nuclear Oversight expectations. 

  • Communicate clearly and effectively with craft personnel, supervisors, engineers, planners, and management regarding inspection requirements, acceptance criteria, and inspection results. 

  • Maintain professional working relationships while ensuring inspection integrity and compliance with requirements. 

Qualifications & Training 

  • Maintain required QC Inspector certifications, qualifications, and training established by Nuclear Oversight, including periodic requalification and demonstration of inspection capability. 

  • Perform inspections only within areas of individual certification and qualification. 

Travel 

  • Travel to nuclear generating sites, supplier facilities, and other locations as required, including domestic and limited international travel. 

Minimum Requirements 

  • Associate’s degree from a two‑year college or technical school or equivalent job‑related experience or training. 

  • Previous experience in nuclear generating plant operations, maintenance, construction, or quality oversight; equivalent experience in other electric power generation industries or the military is acceptable. 

  • Ability to obtain and maintain unescorted access authorization to Xcel Energy nuclear facilities. 

  • Ability to complete and maintain applicable Non‑Destructive Examination (NDE) Level II qualifications associated with ASME Section XI of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code within one year of start date, as applicable to assigned inspection duties.

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $42.32 to $65.11 per hour
