Position Summary

Provides strategic and business planning leadership and consultation to Xcel Energy’s executive management and leadership councils that positions the company for long-term success. This role includes design and implementation of enterprise-wide processes that ensure alignment and achievement of plans and financial objectives. Performs business environment scans to identify events and trends of strategic significance, to create broad understanding of technologies, peer companies, and industry dynamics, and to ensure business intelligence supports key decisions. Facilitates cross-functional and inter-industry efforts to design and implement emerging business opportunities and business development initiatives.


Essential Responsibilities           

  • STRATEGIC PLANNING: Leads and counsels Xcel Energy executives through the development of corporate and operating company strategies and strategic plans. Designs and facilitates the use of systematic tools and techniques to identify priority issues and articulate and challenge strategic assumptions. Examples of tools include scenario planning/learning, Porters 5 Forces Model, Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) analysis, and business risk assessment. Works closely with functional champions to monitor progress of strategic plans. Organizes strategies and plans for presentation to various audiences, including Xcel Energy’s executive management and the Board of Directors. 
  • Works with executive management on the development of corporate, operating company and business area priorities, key performance indicators and targets. Designs and implements business planning guidelines for leaders and planning consultants to ensure alignment with corporate priorities. Facilitates the use of systematic tools and techniques to establish operating company and business area priorities and targets. Provides analysis and recommendations to executive management in support of target setting. Designs and executes the corporate and business area performance monitoring process, including monthly and quarterly results presentations for executive management and the Board of Directors.
  • STRATEGIC & BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE: Performs business environment scans to identify events and trends of strategic significance and to create broad understanding of technologies, peer companies, and industry dynamics. Creates and publishes reports to apprise management and the Board of Directors of events and trends of strategic significance. Conducts research and compiles results for information requests, company profiles, and strategic analysis for executives, often requiring confidential treatment. Researches, analyzes, and creates various comparison studies, such as utility cost comparisons using FERC data, utility rankings, and corporate efficiency metrics. Ensures business intelligence supports key decisions and negotiations.            
  • BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT: Facilitates cross-functional and inter-industry efforts to design and implement emerging business opportunities and business development initiatives. Identifies, investigates, and solves problems and issues. Problems could be, but are not limited to, the areas of business planning, strategic planning, and reporting.               
  • EXECUTIVE SESSIONCOORDINATOR: Acts as the key facilitator for various executive leadership meetings. Works directly with executive leadership to identify issues and desired outcomes. Articulates objectives and develops agendas to ensure effective implementation and execution of business plans, operating plans, and strategic initiatives.        


Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in business, finance, economics or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience. MBA preferred.
  • 5 years of related/relevant work with a preference on experience within the utility/energy industry. Detailed knowledge of Xcel Energy business functions desirable.
  • Emphasis on strategy and business planning and process design and implementation.
  • Project management experience desirable.


Preferred Qualifications

  • MBA from an accredited institution.
  • Experience at top-tier strategy consulting firm and/or experience with the utility, energy, banking, healthcare industry or another highly regulated field.
  • Broad and critical thinker with strong interpersonal skills, who proactively seeks new ideas and feedback, enjoys paving new paths and is not afraid to fail.
  • Exceptionally strong financial acumen, including thorough understanding of corporate financial statements and related metrics. Deep analytical and modeling skills, including experience with scenario modeling, cost-benefit analyses and statistical analysis. Ability to quickly sift through data and efficiently produce meaningful insights.
  • Understanding of market and competitive dynamics.
  • Experience using a variety of strategy and planning frameworks and tools with meaningful results (e.g., stress testing, war games). Understands the role culture plays in decision making and strategy execution.
  • Ability to effectively deal with ambiguity and quickly translate broad concepts into concrete initiatives and work products.
  • Superior communicator (verbal and written) and facilitator across all levels, from C-level through new employees. Experience working directly with C-level executives; strong executive presence and ability to challenge and influence upward.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and get things done through others without formal authority and across organizational boundaries.
  • Self-starter, natural collaborator and continual learner who engages others, establishes credibility quickly and builds trust. High degree of integrity, initiative, and persistence; drives toward results without compromising the quality of relationships at all levels.
  • Understanding of utility regulatory frameworks.
